The towing of the ferry Toshima 2, which had been stuck due to a fire off the coast of Akusekijima in Toshima Village, began on the morning of the 30th.

According to Toshima Village and the Toshima Headquarters, at around 6:30 a.m. on the 29th, a fire broke out in the engine room of the ferry Toshima 2 while it was sailing off the coast of Akusekijima.

A male passenger described the tense situation at the time, saying, “I could smell the burning oil and was scared, thinking I might lose my life.”

Of the 29 people, 18 crew members and 11 passengers, seven crew members remained on board to extinguish the fire, while the remaining 22 people evacuated to Akusekijima on a nearby fishing boat. No one was injured.

The fire in the engine room was confirmed to be extinguished just after 7pm on the 29th, approximately 12 and a half hours later. The ferry was unable to navigate on its own and had drifted approximately 30 kilometers to the east, but a tugboat arrived at the site around 4:30 a.m. on the 30th and began towing toward Kagoshima Port at 8:10 a.m. is.

It is expected to arrive at Kagoshima Port on the morning of the 31st. As an alternative to Ferry Toshima 2, Mishima Village’s ferry Mishima will operate on a return trip to Takarajima on the 31st and is scheduled to depart from Kagoshima Port at 11 p.m.
