The crew members of ferry services in Greece want to strike for 24 hours next Wednesday. They believe that safety on board and working conditions should be improved. The reason is the death of a man in the port of Piraeus, and the outrage that this caused.
A 36-year-old Greek arrived quickly last Tuesday just as the ferry to Crete was about to leave. The lines had already been brought in, but the loading ramp at the back of the ship was still on the quay. The man walked onto the ramp, but was pushed back by a crew member, falling into the swirling water and drowning.
The crew made no attempt to save him. Three to four minutes later his body surfaced, a witness told a Greek news site.

The Greek Minister of Shipping and Island Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, said Wednesday that the man was in possession of a ticket. He had boarded the ferry earlier but also disembarked from the ferry for an unknown reason, returning later.
Three crew members and the captain have been arrested. The man who pushed is suspected of manslaughter, the two other crew members of complicity. The captain allegedly did not comply with shipping rules.
According to a union, many ferry staff are overworked and their schedules are “unreasonable”. The association is therefore concerned about safety on board.
