Luca di Montezemolo was not thrilled to see Ferrari celebrate third place at Spa.
Charles Leclerc started from pole position. He was overtaken by Pérez at the start and later also by Verstappen. In the end, it resulted in third place, which Ferrari can consider a success this year.
But Enzo Ferrari, whose death has now passed 35 years ago, would definitely not consider it a success. At least former Ferrari president and former race team boss Luca Cordero di Montezemolo thinks so.
“You know what makes me sad? That now they are happy with third place, like they did in Spa,” di Montezemelo told Italian newspaper Quotidiano Sportivo.
“Ferrari is not like that and the Old Man would never accept it. Ferrari taught me a lot. For example, he taught me to never rest on my laurels. After winning, he always thought about the next race. At the same time, it was hard work. Enzo hated holidays. He kept me in the office in August, he was not a fan of those who went on vacation in August. But he was also a person who liked to have fun and had a sense of humor.’
“He made me understand that Ferrari is an emotion that has human and social value in its sector, a symbol of research and innovation. As president from 1991 to 2014, I tried to be faithful to his lesson.”
If, according to Di Montezemolo, Ferrari does not have a problem anywhere, it is in the driver line-up.
“I would definitely like to keep Charles, he is good and in my opinion there are no stronger riders available than him at the moment. But who is driving the red car now is the least of the problems.”
“When I was president, I created a dream team from Schumacher to Todt, from Brawn to Byrne. Look, as a fan I don’t dream of Ferrari always winning, but always fighting for the title until the last race of the season, like in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2008, 2010 and 2012. You can lose, but as a title contender and not as an extra.’
