Ferrari Skirmish in British Grand Prix Qualifying: Leclerc vs. Sainz

In qualifying for the British Grand Prix, the Ferraris passed pole position. The shreds were already flying during the session.

The mood in the team has been tense for the last few weeks. According to media reports, Carlos Sainz is said to be dissatisfied with his role in the team, and it is obvious that Charles Leclerc is more popular with the fans – and probably also with the racing team.

Now it came to a skirmish between the two Ferrari drivers in the hectic first qualifying section at Silverstone. After Haas driver Kevin Magnussen, whose car rolled out, triggered a red flag, there was a lot of activity in the final minutes of Q1. All pilots drove out onto the race track again.

Sauer Leclerc

So did Sainz and Leclerc. The Spaniard initially let his Monegasque team-mate pass him on the warm-up lap, but right before the start and finish there was the usual traffic jam, with the drivers leaving a gap to the car in front. So does Leclerc. But then it got too colorful for Sainz. The Spaniard overtook his team-mate back again. Actually a violation of the unwritten “gentlemen’s agreement” of the pilots.

That also annoyed Leclerc. The Ferrari star vented his anger on the pit radio. “Great, Carlos. Good overtaking maneuver in the last corner,” was the Monegasque’s sarcastic comment. Sainz’s answer to this is not yet known.

Ultimately, however, the skirmish had no aftermath. Because Leclerc as a strong second and Sainz as a solid 12th made the leap into Q2. In the team duel, the Monegasque also prevailed, trailing his teammates by twelve thousandths in fourth place.
