Fernando Villavicencio, Presidential Candidate in Ecuador, Shot Dead in Quito Campaign – Replacement Candidate Appointed

Presidential candidate Ecuador, Fernando Villavicencio, was shot dead while campaigning in the capital, Quito. His vice-presidential candidate, Andrea Gonzalez, has been appointed as a replacement candidate.

Reported by AFP Sunday (13/8/2023), Gonzales, will run for president to replace Villavicencio in the August 20 election.

“The move will replace the presidential ticket by placing Andrea Gonzalez as president,” the centrist Construye party said in a statement.

It is known, Fernando Villavicencio is a former member of parliament. The shooting occurred on Wednesday (9/8) local time. This incident prompted President Guillermo Lasso to schedule an urgent meeting with a number of officials.

A video recording a moment called the seconds of the Villavicencio shooting has gone viral on social media. The video shows people taking cover and screaming as gunshots are heard.

Lasso uploaded his statement regarding Villavicencio’s death. He says he will not let this crime happen.

“For his memory and struggle, I assure you that this crime will not go unpunished,” Lasso said at X, Wednesday (9/8).

Lasso said the shooting of Villavicencio was part of organized crime in Ecuador. He said the crime had gone too far.

“But all legal sanctions will fall on them,” said Lasso.
