Fernando is the current three-time champion of the Pan American Games, was fifth in the Rio Olympics and bronze in the 2018 Worlds, always in the heavyweight category. That curriculum, by itself, would already accredit him as a candidate for the podium in Tokyo. The athlete’s lawyer and specialist in doping cases, Marcelo Franklin said he will take steps to prove Fernando Reis’ innocence.

– What I can say is that he is one of the most tested athletes in the world. In the last few months alone, he has had more than ten exams, all without any problems. Then it will be clarified that he did not use any prohibited substances. We will not comment further on this case until the end of the trial in order to preserve the athlete’s image. We will take urgent measures – said the lawyer.

In March, Fernando Reis inherited the 2018 World Cup bronze medal. The result was modified after the official disqualification of Uzbek Rustam Djangabaev, provisionally suspended since April 2019 after testing positive in an anti-doping test. Fernando then became the first athlete from Brazil in history to win a medal in the competition.

The 2018 World Cup was held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. On the occasion, the Brazilian finished the dispute in fourth place with 436kg in the sum of pull + throw, against the Uzbek’s 447kg in the +109kg category. The champion was Lasha Talakhadze, from Georgia, who lifted 474kg, and Gor Minasyan, from Armenia, with 450kg, won silver. The achievement is the most important in Fernando’s career, who is three-time Pan American champion (Guadalajara 2011, Toronto 2015 and Lima 2019) and came fifth at Rio 2016.

Fernando Reis has already gone through a suspension for doping in his career. In 2011, the athlete was caught in examination at the University National Championships, in Shrevport, USA. At the time, he tested positive for the substance methylhexanamine, according to a statement released by the American Anti-Doping Agency (Usada, in English). In the same year, however, he returned to competition and won gold at the Pan de Guadalajara.

The Brazilian Doping Control Authority (ABCD) communicated, in an order, this Friday (16), the provisional suspension of the prisoner Fernando Reis, immediately. The athlete would travel next week to Japan, to participate in the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Fernando was suspended due to an adverse analytical result in a test carried out on June 11, 2021, outside the competition period. The statement says that the substance Growth Hormone, framed in the S2 group, of Peptide Hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics, was found in the collected samples.

The athlete may request the opening of the counter-evidence and the matter will still be judged later by the Anti-Doping Court of Sports Justice. There is still no defined date for the judgment of the matter.

The Brazilian Confederation of Weight Lifting (CBLP) and the Olympic Committee of Brazil (COB) follow the guidelines of the ABCD and use the Fair Game Protocol, for greater reliability of the results of their competitions.
