Could Fernando Alonso return to Le Mans? And could Max Verstappen make an appearance? Partial answers to both questions were revealed by the Dutch racer, who, while saying goodbye to the 2023 season at the Motegi circuit, admitted that he and Fernando Alonso had talked about a possible connection in one car for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, Verstappen himself looks at this idea purely pragmatically.
It’s no secret that Max is very interested in showing himself at Le Mans one day. He is very interested in endurance racing and sports car racing. He is even founding his own racing team, which will compete in this motor category.
At the Motegi circuit on the occasion of Honda Thanks Day, which was actually a farewell to the 2023 season, he met teammate Sergio Pérez, AlphaTauri pilots Daniel Ricciardo and Júki Cunoda, Indy 500 winner Takum Sato, and MotoGP racers including Marc Marquez. Verstappen on this occasion, he answered questions from fans and they also asked about his interest in other motorsport categories, for example the Indianapolis 500.
“I will like to watch the race. I have a lot of respect for what these guys do, but I don’t think I’ll ever show up there.” answered Max, who is a big fan of motorsports and other racing series.
“I would definitely like to try a MotoGP bike, I also like the Japanese SuperGT. I had the opportunity to try one special of this series last year and it was very nice. The Super Formula single-seaters are also great, they are the second fastest in the world after Formula 1 and they look fantastic,” he says Verstappenwho, however, is clear about where he would prefer to direct his interest in motor sports.
“However, I would definitely like to try Le Mans. I’ve been there before when my dad raced. Endurance races have a wonderful atmosphere – lots of fans, they also ride at night or at sunrise. I think it’s really cool,” says the Dutch racer with enthusiasm.
His good friend Fernando Alonso knows it very well at the Circuit de la Sarthe. He won there with the dominant Toyota in 2018 and 2019. The Spanish racer is said to have spoken with Verstappenom, but it is not as simple as it seems at first glance. Max is one of the harder riders and therefore prefers a certain specific group of racers as his potential teammates.
“I spoke with Fernando about going to Le Mans as teammates. He said that he would only go with me again. I think it would be really cool. But the problem is that there is no such thing as a minimum weight for a pilot at Le Mans. However, I am quite a heavy rider, so I have to find lighter teammates to compensate. Fernando is pretty light so it could be cool. But I have to look into it,” he said Verstappen.
