Fermín Gurbindo’s music returns to Ábalos this Sunday

Across the globe, a little piece of Ábalos travels on the back of the compositions of one of its most illustrious neighbors every time a musician picks up his accordion and makes the notes fly. All thanks to the legacy of Fermín Gurbindo, a favorite son of the Rioja town and one of the most relevant international accordion composers. And if the essence of Ábalos travels around the world thanks to the Rioja musician, the Rioja musician will travel to his hometown this Sunday, thanks to the concert that Rioja Filarmonía dedicates this Sunday (starting at one in the afternoon at the Church of San Esteban Protomartyr) to one of the illustrious names of autochthonous music.

The recital, which is entitled ‘Fermín Gurbindo y el accordion’, arises from “the commitment to disseminate and value Rioja’s musical heritage” and is paid by accordionist Alejandro Ares, who will be accompanied by explanations from the doctor in musicology Eduardo Chávarri Alonso.

Rioja Filarmonía, a group that emerged in 2014 to promote and disseminate the artistic expression of a new generation of musicians from a multidisciplinary perspective, highlights that the accordion «has become throughout the 20th century an instrument that has opened its field of action from different popular music to concert halls, auditoriums and official artistic education studios ». All this «thanks to several factors, among which the organological research and development of the instrument itself should be highlighted, as well as the interest and drive of musicians such as José Fermín Gurbindo from La Rioja, who did not hesitate to develop an academic repertoire, without leave aside the most popular and homely aspect of the instrument ».

“Although his personal and professional mark is still latent in the memory of the people who knew him and listened to him, his works are rarely performed in La Rioja”, laments the musical group when explaining the origin of a recital “as a tribute and recognition ”in which the academic and the manners embrace each other to allow the return to their hometown of the most representative compositions of Gurbindo’s work.
