Changed to 100% with Jose Luis Medilibar on his bench, Olympiacos, boosted by the victories over Ferencvaros and PAOK, defeated the Hungarians tonight in Budapest with the same score of the first match (1-0) and deservedly took the ticket for the “16” of the UEFA Conference League. So in today’s draw (23/2, 14.00) in Nyon, he will be present (together with PAOK) and will face one of Aston Villa, Brugge, Fenerbahce, Fiorentina, Lille, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Viktoria Plzen.
In the “Groupama Arena” Olympiacos was impressive. After 25′, the Piraeus team started to threaten the Hungarian goal with Horta (shot) and two headers by El Kaabi, out. Indeed, in the three minutes 38′-40′, Olympiacos missed two very big chances to take the lead against the trapped Ferentsvaros. In the 38th minute, from a steal by Ciquinho, Horta sent a wonderful ball to Fortounis, who, four-four with Dibouze, put it out. And two minutes later, from Fani’s wrong turn, Pontense four-on-four with Dibouze shot hopelessly wide!
The pressure of Olympiakos continued and in the 43′ they won a penalty in the hands of Mahe after a header by El Kaabi. The Moroccan executed it aptly and gave the “red and whites” a lead (0-1) in the 45th minute (in the penalty phase, the VAR called the French referee, who did not see the violation, to see the hand on the monitor and so he indicated it).
After an amazing first half, Olympiakos’ best in the last three years in Europe in an away match, Ferencvaros, who now had nothing to lose after needing two goals to level the aggregate score and three goals to qualify, came out in the second part more pressing with the goal of a quick goal that would put her firmly in the case-qualification. But Olympiacos was impressive and left no room for the beleaguered Hungarians. In fact, if they had been more essential in the final selections, the “red and white” could have achieved another goal…
After 60′, with Olympiakos tired from the continuous pressing, the hosts took the initiative and Piraeus gave space and looked for counter-attacks. Ferentsvaros couldn’t create any danger and in the last quarter, amid cheers from their fans, they played everything for everything. On the contrary, it was Olympiacos who threatened with 0-2 on a fireball by Jovetić that was saved in the corner by Dibouze who saved a shot by Chiquinho after 1-2 with Podense.
The French Clement Turpin “yellowed” the Vargas, Abu Fani.
