On Tuesday evening, Ferencváros started its BL qualifiers, playing in the first round at the home of Faroese champion KÍ Klaksvík. The conditions and the unpleasant style of the opponent did not really suit the Hungarian champions, who achieved a goalless draw in the first match of the duel, so they will have to fight for promotion in next week’s rematch in Budapest.
Two of Fradi’s summer signings from Paks Barnabás Vargaas well as the inside back Ibrahim Cisse got a place from Stanislav Cherchesov in the starting line-up, this is how Ferencváros started the clash:
Dibusz – Botka, S. Mmaee, I. Cissé, Civic – Baráth, Esiti – Marquinhos, Zachariassen, A. Traoré – Varga B.
The situation of the Hungarian champions was complicated by several things: on the one hand, the artificial grass field, and on the other hand, its size, which is smaller than the UEFA standard, required a special permission from the European federation in order for the Faroese to play an official match here.
Those who are also confidently leading the domestic point hunt, which is in full swing, with 16 (!) victories in 16 matches, have been playing stakes matches for months, while the FTC has only held preparatory meetings in the summer.
Despite this, Fradi started the match better, in the first quarter of an hour, Barna Varga, the top scorer of the last edition of the NB I, threatened twice, but first, Jonatan Johansson brilliantly saved the close attempt of the Hungarian national team attacker, who not long after, slid from 6 meters to the right post. . In the 12th minute, Varga was in a position for the third time, but he also headed this opportunity, but after that, the home side had their moments: they were able to take several corners, all of which were dangerously curled into the middle, the Ferencváros defense could only clear the goal with great difficulty .
In the 24th minute, at the end of a counterattack, Adama Traoré headed KÍ’s goal from close range, but Zachariassen, who was passing from the right, received an offside kick, so the goal was invalid. In the continuation, the green and whites also had problems defending the spot kicks and the passes coming from the side, as well as throw-ins – after one of these, in the 44th minute, Klaksvík came extremely close to taking the lead:
a ball slipped on the short side was headed by the bursting Vegard Forren from 7 meters to the crossbar…
However, no goals were scored in the first half, so the teams could go to rest with a score of 0-0.
At the beginning of the second half, the teams did not fall for each other, we were able to register a Marquinhos opportunity from the Ferencváros side, while the Faroese side’s greatest weapons were still point kicks and throw-ins. After more than an hour of play, the Russian master of Fradi tried to update with substitutions, in addition to Owusu, Krisztián Lisztes and Dávid Sigér also entered the field, thanks to which a rare moment occurred:
in Ferencváros, there were more Hungarians on the field than legionnaires (Six:five ratio.)
The game moved to KÍ’s half, in the 77th minute Endre Botka’s excellent pass was saved from Varga on the short side at the penultimate moment, who shortly after nodded over Civic’s free kick from the corner of the five, even though it arrived empty…
The Bosnian defender was also needed at the back in Hajra, as after a counterattack he blocked an attempt on goal. Since both teams’ nets remained intact even in the five-minute extra time, the match ended in a scoreless draw.
A year ago, the international march of Ferencváros got off to a similarly bumpy start, when Cherchesov’s crew also started with a 0-0 draw at the home of Tobol, Kazakhstan, and then in the return leg they reinforced the balance of power with a 5-1 knockout. You still have the opportunity to do so, the second match of the duel will be held next Wednesday from 18:00 at the Groupama Arena.
