A hugely important victory was achieved by the incomplete Panathinaikos over Fenerbahce in Istanbul: 76-81 with Kostas Sloukas as the protagonist, who scored a handful of baskets at the end. At halftime, the “greens” led 35-46.
The good defense led Panathinaikos to a double-digit lead early on: 15-25 with Lesor, Brown, Nunn as protagonists. Yurtseven made it 24-34 and Slukas made it 30-42 with a three-pointer. The difference reached 13 points in the third period: 47-61 with another three-pointer by Sluka against his old team.
The hosts unleashed their opposition with Biberovic leading the way after 56-65 and went on a 14-0 run in an electrifying atmosphere (70-65). Two personal baskets by the amazing Sluka made it 73-75 and Matias Lessor gave Fener the free throw.
The two teams are now tied at 3-2.
Kostas Slukas was the leader of the “greens” with 13 points. Ergin Ataman, who was strongly criticized by his compatriots, also used Grant 9, Brown 14, Nan 15,, Osman 4, Hernangomet 2, Yurtseven 12, Lesor 14. Before the match, a “diplomatic episode” was threatened, since flags of the Turkish Cypriot pseudo-state of Cyprus were displayed in the stands before the match. The Turks withdrew them after the intervention of the official Panathinaikos.
Olympiacos (2-2) is tested on Friday night in Munich against Bayern (2-2). The two “eternals” will face each other on Sunday at SEF (20.15), in the framework of the Basket League, where they are tied undefeated in first place in the standings.
