Femke Halsema Seeks Reappointment as Mayor of Amsterdam for Another Six Years

Sep 13, 2023 at 10:30 AM Update: an hour ago

Femke Halsema would like to continue as mayor of Amsterdam for another six years. She announced this in an email on Wednesday brief to the municipal council. She would consider it an honor to serve Amsterdam for another period, she writes.

“I have now been mayor for more than five years and it is time to let you know whether I wish to be considered for reappointment in 2024. I would like to. It would be an honor to serve our beautiful city for another period,” Halsema writes. .

She says that she wants to continue to work together with the city council, the council and all Amsterdam residents for a “free, undivided, safe and proud city”. She has also informed the King’s Commissioner that she is seeking reappointment.

In the letter, Halsema calls her first period in office “impressive, educational, intense and sometimes difficult, especially for those close to me who have made sacrifices for this”. Nevertheless, gratitude prevails, she writes.

Halsema wants to reexamine procedures and rules

Halsema was sworn in as mayor of Amsterdam in 2018. She set three goals for the city: combating crime, listening to Amsterdam residents who rarely have a say and supporting people who want the space to be different.

Halsema wants to add a task to this for the next six years. According to her, Amsterdam residents too often experience local government as a difficult obstacle instead of a loyal ally. “Too often I hear the urgent and justified wish of Amsterdam residents to be treated as an equal partner of the municipality,” she writes.

Halsema therefore wants to take another look at “our procedures and rules, our complicated system of permits and the way in which we must handle complaints”. She believes that Amsterdam as the capital should set a good example.

Halsema was in the House of Representatives on behalf of GroenLinks between 1998 and 2010. From 2002 she was leader of that party. In 2018 she was installed as mayor of Amsterdam. With her swearing-in, Amsterdam had a female mayor and a mayor from GroenLinks for the first time.
