Demonstration on Dam Square
During the debate, the topic of pro-Palestinian demonstrators came up. JA21 councilor Cas van Berkel stated that the activists “had free rein to make a lawless mess of things.” He described how counter-protesters were allegedly attacked and that “Israeli flags were taken away and smeared”. Van Berkel asked Halsema how long she will continue to view these protesters as peaceful and why she will continue to allow them to wear face coverings. Halsema refuted the accusations and emphasized that the pro-Israel demonstrators had not experienced any inconvenience and that the organization had maintained good enforcement. “It has been well maintained,” she said. “I think the suggestion that there was a left-wing intention behind this is beneath the surface.”
Femke Halsema responds to Geert Wilders’ statements
Geert Wilders shared a statement via ‘X’ that caused a lot of commotion, he shared a photo with the text: “Out of the country with that scum. And Halsema can come along.” The mayor of Amsterdam responded to the remarkable post. “I will no longer accept the accusation of anti-Semitism or facilitating anti-Semitism,” she stated. “And certainly not, I say so, but just in general, if that comes from people who discriminate against Moroccans and Muslims at the same time. And thus demonstrate that they do not understand what the fight against racism means, of which anti-Semitism is part.” This statement was supported by loud drums and applause from councilors and officials.
Freedom of expression
Despite Halsema’s defense, there was also criticism. VVD faction leader Daan Wijnants expressed his concern about the importance of counter-demonstrations that may endanger public order. He suggested using a greater distance for these types of demonstrations, but Halsema maintained her position that the law requires this. “Jewish hatred and Muslim hatred are increasing. That is unpalatable. There is no room for hatred in our city. There is room for pain, sadness, and anger. And for hope.”
