Feminist Organizations Call for Protection of Human Rights of Medical Interns

Oaxaca de Juárez.- Organizations and activists defending human rights in Oaxaca issued a statement to support students of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez de Oaxaca (UABJO), who have denounced that the allocation of social service positions is conditioned on signing a letter outlining responsibilities in the face of the Covid-19.

In a document addressed to legislators, local authorities, and the Human Rights Defender of the People of Oaxaca (DDHPO), the organizations expressed that on July 7, graduates of the 20-21 generation, who are about to perform their service Social and medical interns, publicly denounced that both the university and the Health sector asked that if any medical condition arose they should notify it and if they decided to carry out the social service anyway, it would have to be at their own risk.

They denounced that a few days ago messages were sent to them via WhatsApp, where students were made aware that if they presented any chronic illness that represented a risk in the face of the pandemic, they should not be assigned a place, but if they insisted on doing social service, they had to deliver the letter to disclaim any responsibility, the above because “disabilities due to risk pathologies” would not be accepted, and if they resigned, they would not be assigned another cycle.

In the case of the students, they were notified that “they should not be pregnant during the service, nor currently due to the risks with Covid.”

In view of this situation, the organizations indicated that said students are being pressured to sign said letter that delimits both institutions from any health situation that may happen to them during the period of social service and indicated that the demands are violating and imply a backward movement to the rights established in the document Rights, obligations and disciplinary measures for interns in social service, of Health Services of Oaxaca.

This document, to which they refer, indicates that the interns are entitled to a “Gravity Leave”, with a duration of 90 calendar days, one month before and two after delivery, without detriment to the payment of the scholarship or the calculation of time. of the service, as well as “Sick Leave”, with a maximum duration of 30 working days, without detriment to the payment of the scholarship.

Also established the right to receive medical, surgical, hospital and medication assistance, as well as an economic amount if they should suffer an accident in the fulfillment of their activities within the social service.

For this reason, feminist organizations urged the corresponding agencies to take the necessary measures to protect and guarantee the rights of female and male students ready to provide social service as medical interns.

“The requirement not to get pregnant during this period of service or before doing the service is in violation of your sexual and reproductive rights, since freedom of choice is deprived of your body and your life. The rights are progressive, therefore nobody can demand them to renounce them, in this sense a serious violation is incurred, ”they reiterate.

By supporting the public complaint by the students, they assured that they will be “vigilant and attentive to the actions that the institutions involved carry out against medical students.”

In this regard, the SSO indicated that the process is carried out for the allocation of places for social service is done in accordance with respect for human rights.

In a statement, the agency stated that security, protection and transparency in the selection processes of social service interns in the different clinical fields, is an “assumed commitment”, and assured that in the case of pregnant interns “There will be no discrimination of any kind,” and their rights are guaranteed, such as disability due to pregnancy.

Consulted by EL UNIVERSAL, Luis Manuel Sánchez Navarro, director of the UABJO Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, said that the requirements requested from students are extraordinary measures in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic and come from the Higher General Directorate of Education in Health (DGSES), which is the body that issues guidelines for the use of clinical fields (places) at the national level.

“If a woman is currently pregnant, she has to manifest it as such. You are not being asked for a pregnancy sample, but it must be said in such a way that, according to the Political Constitution, you enjoy the rights expressed therein and you would have to be given your maternity leave or process a temporary leave so that neither she nor the product was exposed to a risky situation, in which she may even lose her life, ”he declared, in the sense that it may be a risk factor.
