In West, a building on the Kanaalstraat has been squatted. The squatters announced this earlier in the evening by means of banners hanging from the window. The police also confirms the squatting action in the building near the Vondelpark.
A statement pasted on the front door of the building states that the building was squatted to house women, transgenders and non-binary people. “It is becoming increasingly difficult to pay our rent or find a house. Women, transgender people and non-binary people are affected,” said the squatters, who call the property ‘Villa Mina’.
“Opening Villa Mina is our way of meeting this need,” write the squatters, who claim to be part of a feminist group of activists. The squatters say that local residents are very welcome to come by soon.
No declaration
According to local residents, the squatted building has been empty for about six years. According to a police spokesman, the owner of the address has not yet filed a report. There are also no plans to evacuate the building yet.
Since the end of 2019, a new policy has been in effect that allows squatters, under certain conditions, to be evicted urgently if they are caught red-handed. Squatters usually try to prevent this by not revealing themselves until a few days after the squat.
