MALMÖ/STOCKHOLM. The shoes can cause serious injuries to female soccer players.
Now Magdalena Eriksson is waiting for change.
– All previous research has been on men, she says.
During Wednesday wrote UNT about results from a British study showing that female soccer players run an increased risk of injury due to the fact that the soccer shoes are designed for men.
According to the study at St Mary’s University, they are above all at increased risk of cruciate ligament injuries and stress fractures.
– It should not be the norm for women to wear something designed for men. We need a different soccer shoe because women have different needs, for example when it comes to different shapes on the feet, says researcher Katrine Okholm Kryger from St Mary’s University to UNT.
Magdalena Eriksson’s reaction
National team defender Magdalena Eriksson has Nike as a personal sponsor and says that women’s shoes are on the way from the clothing brand giant.
– It feels very timely, says Eriksson and continues:
– Nike has talked to me about it, so I know it will come very, very soon. It feels very important considering that more research is being done now and more results are coming out that scare you a little – that you might be playing with the wrong shoes that don’t fit you perfectly.
“Smaller versions of men”
Magdalena Eriksson is happy about the research that has been done and will be done.
– It is so damn important, because all the research in the past has been on men. Then they treat us like smaller versions of men. We’re not like that. It feels good that there are reports, because it puts more pressure on shoe manufacturers to have women’s shoes, she says.
National teammate Julia Zigiotti Olme plays with Adidas shoes and agrees with Magdalena Eriksson.
– I think it is moving forward all the time and it is clear that you would like to have it earlier, but the fact that it is being talked about now and created is only positive, says Zigiotti Olme.
