Female Passenger Takes Control and Makes Emergency Landing on Massachusetts Island

US police announced that a female passenger on board a small plane took control and made an emergency landing on the island of Massachusetts, Saturday, after the pilot had an emergency health condition.

The emergency landing occurred on Saturday afternoon near Martha’s Vineyard Airport in West Tisbury, Massachusetts.

Massachusetts State Police said the pilot, a 79-year-old man, experienced an emergency while approaching his final destination.

The police said that the accident “resulted in a violent landing outside the runway, which led to the breaking of the left wing of the plane in the middle.”

Authorities did not name either of the two people on board, and said they were taken to hospital.

The pilot was airlifted to a Boston hospital in a serious, life-threatening condition.

Police said the female passenger who landed the plane, who had no experience piloting planes, was unharmed and discharged from a local hospital.

The 2006 Piper Meridian departed from Westchester County, New York, earlier Saturday afternoon.

State police and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
