FEMA Conducts National Emergency Alert Test on October 4, 2023

This Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at 8:20 p.m. French time, all people who have a cell phone and are in the United States will receive an alert message. This is a test, conducted nationally by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“This is a test of the National Emergency Alert System. No action is necessary,” will clarify the message, according to a statement from the United States Department of Homeland Security. The message will be sent in English, or Spanish, depending on the language used by the cell phone.

A message will also be broadcast on all televisions and radios in the country.

“An effective way to alert the public”

“The objective of this test is to ensure that this system is an effective means of alerting the public of emergencies, and in particular, those at the national level,” adds the press release, which specifies that this test is being carried out for the second time on all mobile phones in the country. Such a device could, for example, be deployed in the event of an act of terrorism, a natural disaster, or shootings, for example.

A similar test was carried out in France in February 2023 on certain mobile phones concerning the Fr-Alert device, which allows you to send an SMS in the event of an emergency.
