Fem van Empel ended her cyclo-cross season on Sunday with a solo victory in the Krawatencross. – For the umpteenth time – there was no limit to the world champion from Brabant.
Van Empel wasted no time in Lille, Belgium. The 21-year-old Dutchwoman almost immediately increased the pace. Only compatriot Lucinda Brand was able to follow her trail for a moment.
In the second round Brand also had to pass and Van Empel opted for the open water. Her victory was never in danger again. At the finish she was 36 seconds ahead of number two Brand. The Belgian Laura Verdonschot finished third at an appropriate distance.
The Krawatencross is part of the so-called X²O Bathrooms Trophy, the eighth and final competition of which will take place in Brussels next week. Van Empel will not be there. She has won the first seven cyclo-cross races, meaning that the overall victory can no longer elude her.
Van Empel’s cyclo-cross season is now over. Her series of results is something to see. Of the 21 times she started, she crossed the line as winner 19 times. The most important victory came last week, when she extended her world title in Tábor, Czech Republic.
Niels Vandeputte won among the men. The Belgian stayed ahead of Joris Nieuwenhuis by five seconds. Lars van der Haar finished fourth behind Belgian Joran Wyseure. Mathieu van der Poel did not participate in Lille. The world champion has already concluded his cyclo-cross season and is focusing on the spring road races.
