Fem van Empel surprises herself in Flèche Wallonne: “This is very special”

Video Fem van Empel rode the Flèche Wallonne for the first time in her career today. In addition to eighth place, she had a ‘super good’ feeling about her debut. That’s what the Visma rider | said Lease a Bike afterwards CyclingFlits.

“I was able to ride well from the front throughout the entire race,” said Van Empel. “I tried to pick out the points that I didn’t master very well in the Amstel Gold Race. At the end I was maybe a little too far to go with the best, but I didn’t cross the finish line with any regrets.”

Van Empel crossed the line eighth, 24 seconds behind winner Kasia Niewiadoma. A top ten on her debut. “This is very special. I surprised myself a bit, so I’m proud. This certainly makes me want to do more, but now I won’t be doing much for a week. Then we will look at how we can further flesh out the program.”

Does Van Empel already have an idea what the next goal could be? “Maybe choose a nice stage somewhere in a big tour, but what I said: it is a matter of discussing with the team which path we are going to take.”
