She is still not completely fit, but Fem van Empel has won another cyclocross. After being defeated in Hulst and Gavere, the world champion in Baal won the first cross of the new year in a competition that counts for the X20 trophy.
An advantage for the Brabantian was that Pieterse skipped the cross in Baal, just like Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado.
Competition from Brand
This paved the way for Van Empel to the highest podium, but she faced stiff competition from compatriot Lucinda Brand from round one.
Cyclo-cross live at NOS
All cyclo-cross World Cup races will be broadcast live this season on NOS.nl and in the NOS app. The race will take place in Zonhoven on Sunday. The women start at 1:40 PM and the men at 3:10 PM.

On a fairly swampy course, they ran away together and within one lap they had a 1.15 minute lead over a group that was fighting for third place.
The two no longer had anything to fear from that group, even when they both got harder and harder and even fell. First Van Empel was on the ground and then Brand, but it was not possible to really benefit from each other’s falls. They continued to chase each other until the final round.
Still a hole punched
It was not visible that Van Empel is also still recovering from a cold. On the tough course in Belgium, the Visma-Lease a Bike rider managed to open a gap in the final phase and take another victory.
