On Wednesday, 27-year-old Felix Monsén did very well in training in Italian Val Gardena and had the second fastest time. But on Thursday, the skier crashed in the training run – and injured his knee so much that his season is now over. Now awaits about nine months of rehabilitation.
This was announced by the ski association on Thursday evening, when it was discovered after examinations that the patellar tendon and the anterior cruciate ligament were off and that the meniscus was damaged.
After the operation, which will be carried out within the next few days, months of rehab await, Monsén tells Aftonbladet on Friday.
– It is of course very boring. I felt my form was better than ever. Even though I did not get it out of competition, I really felt that I had something going on. But it’s just to accept, he tells the newspaper.
He also talks about the experience of the crash.
– It was probably maximum bad luck, how I land and how I put the pressure on the ski. Had I put the ski two centimeters differently, it probably would not have happened. I immediately felt that something had broken in my lap, he says and continues:
– It was mainly just such a sick pain. At first I thought that the patellar tendon had gone out of joint because I saw that the knee pointed out a little in a damn strange way. It hurt so much that I thought I would knock the shit back to ease the pain, but it was probably a good thing I did not. But then the thoughts start to go fast, with the season, no Olympics. There is a lot of stuff that starts to spin and becomes heavy.
Monsén took his best world cup placement so far when he came in 13th place in the downhill race in Lake Louise in Canada, at the end of November.
He aimed to be taken to the Olympics in Beijing in February, but that will not be the case given the injury.
