Felix Lobrecht and his autobiographical novel “Sonne und Beton”: Survival training in the ghetto

Felix Lobrecht and his autobiographical novel “Sonne und Beton” are now coming to the cinema. Coming of Age in Neukölln, hard and rough.

Felix Lobrecht is actually known as a stand-up comedian (“Kenn ick”, “Hype”) and a successful podcaster (“Mixed Hack”). His autobiographical novel “Sonne und Beton” from 2017 tells of the tough youth that Lobrecht experienced in the Gropiusstadt housing estate in Berlin-Neukölln. Now director David Wnendt (“Wetlands,” “He’s Back”) has brought it to life, creating a dark, gritty coming-of-age drama that’s in theaters now.

The four buddies Lukas, Julius, Sanchez and Gino not only have to cope with everyday life in the social hot spot day after day. A group of dealers also wants to extort money from Lukas until tomorrow, otherwise they’ll finish him off. The plan of the four: steal new computers from the school…

Our author Felix Eisenreich is impressedthat the film, despite hip aesthetics, vividly tells of the devastating reality of life of the four friends, where supposed mainstream topics such as gender, equality and climate crisis do not, cannot take place. Because: “The problems are much more existential: poverty produces violence. And to get through life without violence is a privilege. given of the debates about Berlin’s New Year’s Eve, this film is all the more topical,” he writes.
