Spain’s King Felipe has commemorated the recent shooting at a Texas elementary school in New York, which left 21 dead. Felipe was in the American city on a visit to the Foreign Policy Association (FPA), where he was awarded the Foreign Policy Medal.
“Today our thoughts are with the 21 victims of the Texas tragedy,” Felipe said at the beginning of his speech. “Therefore, on behalf of the Spanish people, I would like to express my deepest condolences to their families and friends and to the American authorities at this difficult time.”
The Foreign Policy Medal is the FPA’s highest award. It is awarded to “individuals who work to expand the public’s knowledge of international affairs”. In his speech, Felipe called it a “great honor” to receive the medal. “I am delighted to receive him in person, after so many months when the Covid-19 pandemic prevented us from meeting in person,” said Felipe.
While visiting New York, Felipe also visited the Spanish-American Chamber of Commerce. He also had lunch at the United Nations headquarters with António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General.
