Feldkirch Bishop Benno Elbs Opens Vorarlberg Catholic Education Center St. Arbogast: A Place for All Ages and Spiritual Seekers

Vorarlberg Catholic Educational Center St. Arbogast Reopens as a Place for All

Feldkirch, June 24th, 2023 – The newly renovated Vorarlberg Catholic educational center St. Arbogast has reopened its doors in Götzis after six months of extensive remodeling. The center, which represents the educational mission of the church in a secular age, aims to be a place for people of all ages and beliefs, according to Bishop Benno Elbs of Feldkirch.

In his welcoming address at the reopening ceremony on Friday, Bishop Elbs emphasized the importance of addressing the legitimate questions and inquiries of young people in the 21st century. He acknowledged that the church, often seen as an old institution, must find ways to connect with the younger generation and contribute to the success of coexistence in society.

Bishop Elbs believes that education should focus on the poles of “origin and contemporaneity.” He emphasized the need for individuals to examine what shapes them culturally, personally, and socially. Even church-critical observers like Peter Sloterdijk have highlighted the importance of staying connected to one’s roots and identity. According to Elbs, constant reinvention is not possible, and therefore, critical examination of one’s foundation is essential.

Furthermore, Bishop Elbs stressed the importance of embracing the present and looking towards the future. He stated that education should involve asking critical questions and acquiring knowledge that can be applied to various aspects of life. The bishop highlighted values such as mindfulness, social responsibility, spirituality, solidarity, and the ability to relate, among others. Ultimately, he posed the question, “What does all this have to do with God?”

The reopening of St. Arbogast was attended by notable figures, including Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and Vorarlberg’s Governor Markus Wallner. Bishop Elbs expressed his gratitude for the presence of the Federal President, considering it a great appreciation of the center’s mission.

Interested individuals had the opportunity to explore the new premises during the open house days on Friday and Saturday (June 23/24). The reopening was celebrated with a festival service on Saturday at 5 p.m. The festival program also included concerts, behind-the-scenes tours, and a children’s program.

St. Arbogast has been serving as a meeting place for education and culture for adults and young people in the Diocese of Feldkirch for the past 60 years. The Catholic Church has provided extensive facilities that have been utilized by numerous visitors over the years.

The reopening of St. Arbogast marks a significant step in the church’s efforts to engage with young people and address their questions and concerns. The center aims to be a place where individuals of all backgrounds can come together to learn, grow, and explore their beliefs in a changing world.

How does the newly established Arbogast Forum promote open-minded dialogue and reflection on topics relevant to society, religion, and education

Bservations and questioning should be welcomed and addressed openly, according to the bishop.

The renovated St. Arbogast center reflects this vision with its modern facilities and versatile spaces. The renovation project aimed to create an inclusive and welcoming environment that fosters dialogue and exchange between people of different backgrounds and beliefs. The center now includes conference rooms, seminar rooms, a chapel, a library, and cozy areas for relaxation and contemplation.

One of the highlights of the center is the newly established Arbogast Forum, a space dedicated to hosting discussions and debates on various topics relevant to society, religion, and education. The forum aims to provide a platform for open-minded dialogue and reflection, inviting experts, scholars, and the general public to engage in meaningful conversations.

In addition to its educational mission, St. Arbogast also offers a range of programs and events for people of all ages. From youth camps and workshops to spiritual retreats and cultural performances, the center aims to cater to diverse interests and provide opportunities for personal growth and enrichment.

The reopening ceremony was attended by local authorities, educational professionals, and members of the community who expressed their excitement and support for this renewed educational center. Many praised the commitment of the Catholic Church in Vorarlberg to adapt to the changing times and create a space that is open and inviting to all.

With its focus on education, dialogue, and inclusivity, St. Arbogast aims to be a place where people can explore their beliefs, engage in genuine conversations, and contribute to a more harmonious and diverse society. The renovated center reflects the Catholic Church’s commitment to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, offering a welcoming space for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and learn from one another.
