Aware of his lack of support, Feijo used his address to parliament on Tuesday to attack Sanchez over his proposed deal with Catalan separatists.
In exchange for support for the Sánchez cabinet, Catalan nationalist hardliners – Carles Puigdemont’s “Together for Catalonia” (JxCat) party – are demanding amnesty for separatist leaders convicted of holding the 2017 independence referendum, as well as officially holding another referendum on Catalan self-determination.
In his closing speech before the vote of confidence, Feijo accused Sánchez of succumbing to “blackmail by those who do not believe in Spain”.
“Whether Sanchez becomes prime minister or not depends entirely on what Puigdemont wants,” Feijo said. “What is offered [Katalonijas] pro-independence movement (..), is a direct attack on the basic values of our democracy and our country.”
The deputy leader of the PP, Kuka Gamarra, also stated that Sanchez is “ready to sell Spain at any price, just to satisfy his own interests”.
Around 40,000 people took to the streets of Madrid on Sunday to protest the amnesty of Catalan nationalist leaders.
Sánchez’s possible agreement with the Catalan separatists has also caused dissatisfaction among the socialists he represents.
Although Sánchez’s government pardoned a dozen convicted Catalan nationalists, he has not yet spoken publicly about their amnesty.
He has only announced that he will maintain “trust in the policy of normalization in Catalonia”.
