At the age of 33, Federico Delbonis put an end to his 16-year career as a professional tennis player at the Argentina Open, where he lost in the doubles with Facundo Bagnis against the Spaniards Jaume Munar and Roberto Carballes by 6-4 and 6-2 .
”This is what I wanted: to be able to say goodbye. We tennis players always try to find solutions or things that make us good. Today I feel like I’m doing the same thing, and that it’s okay to say goodbye,” said the Argentine after the match on Court 2 of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club where he was accompanied by family, friends, and also his wife Virginia and their three children.
“Delbo” was the winner of the most important point in the history of Argentine tennis to win the Salad Bowl in 2016. It was in the victory over Ivo Karlovic by 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2 for Argentina to beat Croatia by 3-2 the Davis Cup final in Zagreb.
Delbonis had his best position in the ATP ranking that same year, reaching 33rd place. In addition, he won two ATP titles: San Pablo 2014 and Marrakech 2016, and reached the finals in Nice 2014 and the ATP 500 in Hamburg in 2013, which he reached after beating Roger Federer in the semifinals.
