Federer vs Sampras: A Superior Wimbledon Final Compared to Djokovic vs Alcaraz, Says Robbie Koenig

Robbie Koenig said Federer vs Sampras is better than Djokovic vs Alcaraz (Provided by Tennis World UK)

Tennis insider Robbie Koenig spoke about the Wimbledon final between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz on the Inside-In podcast on the Tennis Channel. The final at the All England Club drew many comparisons.

Some have compared it to the final between Nole and Roger Federer in 2019, while others have spoken about passing the baton. Going further back in time highlights the 2001 Wimbledon match between the very young Roger Federer and another Wimbledon legend, Pete Sampras.

However, Koenig doesn’t agree with these comparisons at all, stating: “I heard that some commentators compared this final to Federer-Sampras in 2001, but it’s not similar at all.

There is no passing of the baton and the matches are not comparable at all. Federer and Sampras were two experts on this surface, while it’s not the same for these two, especially for Alcaraz, who is a rookie on the Tour, despite being very strong.”

The Wimbledon final and the question of the GOAT

The Spanish champion confirmed his world number one position and claimed a beautiful and hard-fought victory in the Wimbledon final, beating his new great rival Djokovic in five sets.

The Serb was champion on the London turf for several years and was aiming for his eighth title to equal Roger Federer’s record. Nole has won multiple titles and is considered by many to be the GOAT of the sport as he is the most accomplished tennis player. Not everyone sees it that way and in fact there is another large group of fans who are more attracted to Roger Federer or even Rafael Nadal feel, in a debate that will go down in history.

Meanwhile, the fight between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz is keeping all tennis fans in a trance, who can’t wait to see a Wimbledon rematch, perhaps at the next Grand Slam, the US Open, which will be held in a few weeks.

We recall that Carlitos is the defending champion in New York, while Nole is set to return to the US following last season’s COVID-19 ban.
