Roger Federer can call himself the highest paid athlete in the world for the first time. The legendary tennis player leaves Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi on a list published by the American business magazine Forbes.
The 37-year-old Federer made about $ 106.3 million in salary and prize money in the past twelve months, or more than $ 95 million. Ronaldo ($ 105 million) and Messi ($ 104 million) complete the top three.
Just behind Federer, Ronaldo and Messi, Neymar follows with $ 95.5 million and LeBron James with $ 88.2 million. The next tennis player after Federer is Novak Djokovic; he is number 23 with $ 44.6 million. Rafael Nadal is 27th with $ 40 million.
It is the first time in the thirtieth anniversary of the Forbesranking that a tennis player takes first place. That is different from the women, where since 1990 a tennis star has always been number one. Currently that is Naomi Osaka.
Federer won his twentieth and as yet last Grand Slam tournament in the 2018 Australian Open. Since then, he only reached the finals in four major tournaments at Wimbledon, in which he lost to Djokovic.
Like his fellow tennis players, Federer is experiencing a season thrown by the coronavirus, although his year would already look different because of an operation on his knee.
