Federer leaves Wimbledon

It has been played for Roger Federer at Wimbledon. Hubert Hurkacz won in three straight sets – and ended the match with elimination figures.

Eight titles on Wimbledon’s turf and a total of 20 grand slam titles – the most ever with Rafael Nadal – has it become too Roger Federer. But the question is whether there will be any more for the Swiss tennis legend, who turns 40 in August.

Federer, who has been plagued with major injury problems in recent years, received a travel pass on Wednesday night already in Wimbledon’s quarter final.

Against the 18-ranked Pole Hubert Hurkacz he fell in three straight sets, 3–6, 6–7, 0–6. The match was Hurkacz’s first grand slam quarterfinal ever.

– It was incredibly special to meet Roger here, it was a dream come true. He has so many incredible moments here, says Hurkacz.

According to the news agency AFP, it is the first time since 2002 that Federer loses a match at Wimbledon in three straight sets. It is also the first time he loses a set by 0-6 in the classic tournament.

One heavyweight who did better was the world setter Novak Djokovic which now comes ever closer to touching Rafael Nadal’s and Federer’s record of 20 grand slam titles in men’s tennis. Djokovic has a total of 19 grand slam titles and is now sniffing at another one.

Hungary’s first male quarterfinalist at Wimbledon since 1948, Marton Fucsovics, did not manage to stop the Serb. Djokovic won in three straight sets with 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.

Now a semifinal awaits against the Canadian Denis Shapovalov for Djokovic.

The following players have the most victories in tennis’ four major tournaments – the Australian Open, the French Championships, Wimbledon and the US Open:

20: Roger Federer (Switzerland), Rafael Nadal (Spain)

19: Novak Djokovic (Serbia)

14: Pete Sampras (USA)

12: Roy Emerson (Australien)

11: Rod Laver (Australia), Björn Borg (Sweden)
