New York (dpa) – After renouncing the Olympics, the long-time tennis world number one Roger Federer could be back at the US Open. The then 40-year-old Swiss is on the registration list for the last Grand Slam tournament of the season, as the organizers announced.
After his quarter-final at Wimbledon, Federer decided not to go to the Olympics in Tokyo and would rather care for his right knee, which had been operated on twice. The winner of 20 Grand Slam titles could also cancel for the US Open.
The men’s entry list is headed by the Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic, who starts at the Olympics and could complete the Grand Slam with a triumph in Flushing Meadows – winning the four most important tournaments in one season. The Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who, like Djokovic and Federer, has collected 20 Grand Slam titles, is also on the entry list after he has renounced Wimbledon and the Olympics.
In the women’s list, Wimbledon winner Ashleigh Barty from Australia heads the list, with the two-time US Open winner Naomi Osaka also taking part. The Japanese had withdrawn after winning the first round at the French Open at the end of May and made long periods of depression public. Osaka did not start at Wimbledon recently, but is now at the Olympics.
