Federation Cup for Men’s Handball: Second Round Determines Finalists

Reda Saleem (Dubai)

On Saturday, the Federation Cup for Men’s Handball will witness a new round of the preliminary round of the first tournament this season, as Al Wasl meets Sharjah in the “Emperor” Hall, and Dibba Al-Hisn meets Shabab Al-Ahly in the Al-Hosn Hall, within the second round of the first group, while Al-Jazira meets Maliha in the “Emperor” Hall. Pride of Abu Dhabi, and Al Ain with Al Nasr in the “Violet” Hall in the second group.
The second round determines the features of the two sides of the final match, according to the tournament system, where the first from each group qualifies for the final match that will be held on September 16, especially since the first round witnessed “heavy caliber” surprises, with Dibba Al Hisn defeating Al Wasl 20-19, in the group. The first, also, was Maliha’s victory over Al-Nasr 24-19, while Al-Jazira defeated Al-Ain 20-19, and Al-Sharjah defeated Shabab Al-Ahly 21-18.
The second round may witness the farewell of two teams from each group, and stay away from the competition for the lead. If Al-Wasl loses to Al-Sharjah, it will be eliminated from the competition, and its last confrontation against Shabab Al-Ahly will become a “achievement” for it, while if it wins over Al-Sharjah, it will resume the competition for the top spot in the group. To the stadium again, which applies to the match between Dibba Al-Hisn and Shabab Al-Ahly, because the loss of “Al-Fursan” in a second match removes the team from the competition, while the victory of Shabab Al-Ahly makes it wait for the final round, and the outcome of the Sharjah match with Dibba Al-Hisn.
The situation is not much different in the second group, which is led by Maliha, with a goal difference from Al Jazira, and the confrontation between them for the lead, and the winner of them leads the group, but is waiting for the last round, while the confrontation is between Al Ain and Al Nasr, in an attempt to compensate for the loss of the first round and return to the race.
What is interesting is that the tournament system only specifies the first of each group for the final, and does not leave the opportunity to play the semi-finals, and the Competitions Committee treats the tournament as a simplified opening of the season, and preparation for the teams, and then the “Super” on September 22 before the Emirates Cup begins in October, and then League 11. November.
