Federal Representative Calls for Restoration of Homes and Roads in Storm-Affected Areas of Guerrero

Mexico City, October 15, 2023

The legislator indicated that 37 landslides, damage to the Acapulco-Zihuatanejo federal highway and the disappearance of the road that goes from El Paraíso in Atoyac de Álvarez to Lindavista in San Miguel Totolapan have been recorded.

He regretted that the Fonden, which was largely the one with resources to deal with this type of phenomena, no longer exists.

Federal Representative Reynel Rodríguez Muñoz presented to the Chamber of Deputies an appeal for the federal government to implement the necessary actions for the restoration of homes, roads and businesses in the areas affected in the state of Guerrero by the passage of Tropical Storm Max, which made landfall on October 10.

Through a Point of Agreement, the member of the PRI Parliamentary Group explained that the geographical location of the state of Guerrero causes it to be one of the most affected by natural disasters year after year. On this occasion the natural phenomenon hit the municipality of Petatlán, on the Costa Grande.

He explained that in its wake it left floods, house collapses, road closures, landslides, falling fences, trees, poles, overflowing rivers, and most regrettably, injured and missing people. He indicated that so far 37 landslides have been recorded, of which 12 are from Acapulco, 14 from Atoyac de Álvarez, five in Petatlán, one in Coyuca de Benítez and one in Tecpan de Galeana.

The legislator pointed out that heavy rains have also been recorded in 17 municipalities, in the days after the Tropical Storm, as well as severe damage in the Acapulco-Zihuatanejo federal section and the road that goes from the community of El Paraíso in Atoyac de Álvarez, to Lindavista in San Miguel Totolapan which was destroyed.

He regretted that these contingencies show the fragility in which people live in Guerrero, but, he stressed, he was more critical of the fact that the Natural Disaster Fund Trust (Fonden) no longer exists, which was largely the one that dealt with this type of phenomena. .

For this reason, Rodríguez Muñoz reiterated that it is urgent to provide support for the Costa Grande region of Guerrero and all affected areas. He maintained that this population subsists through agriculture and as their second main activity they have livestock, therefore, with this type of natural phenomena their income is completely adrift and at this time the activities are paralyzed.
