“It must be clear: the Basic Law guarantees freedom of assembly and freedom of demonstration. Everyone has the right to take to the streets for their opinion. But it does not justify violence,” Steinmeier said on Wednesday in Dresden.

Democracy lives from conflicts being resolved peacefully. “Anyone who practices violence in the context of demonstrations commits crimes. Anyone who is responsible for it is treated as a criminal.”

On the previous Thursday, Friday and Saturday demonstrations escalated in Leipzig (TAG24 reported). The police had pelted people with disguises with stones, bottles and firecrackers. The riots were triggered by squatting that had been ended by the police (TAG24 reported).

Steinmeier had visited the Military History Museum of the Bundeswehr (MHM) in Dresden on Wednesday. There he saw the show “War makes nation. How the German Empire came about”.

The special exhibition deals with the founding of the German Reich as a nation state 150 years ago – and also takes a look at October 3, 1990, the day of reunification.
