Early on Saturday morning, the federal police arrested a suspected smuggler duo. The officials noticed the Ford Mondeo because of the many people in the vehicle, the federal police said on Monday. At around four in the morning, the emergency services checked the vehicle with Polish registration, which left the A17 at the Südvorstadt junction and was heading towards downtown Dresden.
The federal police officers discovered a total of nine people between the ages of 15 and 26 in the vehicle – four of them were sitting in the back seat, three more were in the trunk. They could not produce any documents that would prove a legitimate stay in Germany and stated that they were Syrian nationals.
The 49-year-old driver and 41-year-old passenger were arrested on suspicion of smuggling in foreigners. After the demonstration before the responsible magistrate, both had to be remanded in custody.
