Federal Ministry of Education and Ministries of Education in Federated Member States of Somalia provide grants to 616 primary schools to enroll 25,000 children | Info

Mogadishu, November 25, 2021 – The Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education of the Federal Government of Somalia (MOECHE), in collaboration with the Ministries of Education of the Federated Member States, provides grants to 616 primary schools to support the schooling of 25,000 children.

These grants are supported to the tune of $ 25.9 million by funds provided by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) to MOECHE, as part of the funding for the implementation of its education sector plan.

This action is a great contribution to the development of Somalia. According to the 2020 Health and Demographic Survey, in Somalia, only 27 percent of children of primary school age and 25 percent of girls of primary school age are currently in school. The grants awarded will help expand equitable access to quality education in underserved areas, especially for girls, vulnerable people and children with disabilities.

They will also support the recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic which has increased social and economic pressures on parents, the various stakeholders in the education chain and learners. A first tranche of grants awarded to schools during the previous school year enabled the schooling of more than 37,000 children.

School grants have also been used to build infrastructure and improve the capacity of schools to accommodate additional students in the future.

The disbursement of these grants will be marked by a ceremony on November 25, 2021 in Mogadishu. The event will see the participation of His Excellencies Mohamed Hussein Roble, Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and Abdullahi Abubakar Haji, Minister of Education, Culture and Higher Education.

Speaking on the program, His Excellency Abdullahi Abubakar Haji, Minister of Education, Culture and Higher Education, asserted : “GPE’s support will help expand access to education for children in Somalia. The funds will help schools get more children into school, especially girls and those from disadvantaged groups, and help improve the quality of education. “

Alice Albright, Executive Director of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) for his part declared that: “GPE’s support for the education and learning of Somali youth is more crucial than ever. With families, schools and governments struggling to cope with the impact of the pandemic, this funding will help attract more children to classrooms and support efforts to transform the education system so that ” it is more equitable and inclusive. “
