The decision is still on the table to close all our nuclear reactors by 2025, as stated in the coalition agreement. But the French-speaking liberals of the MR are opposed, they want to keep two reactors open longer, because they fear power shortages.
In addition, there is the problem of gas-fired power stations that have to cope with the closure of our nuclear power stations. At least one of these, that of Vilvoorde, will not receive a permit. That’s why it’s all taking so long, Deputy Prime Minister for Ecolo Georges Gilkinet said last night: “It’s technically difficult, but we have to find a solution. We have to be ready for Christmas.”
There are therefore still difficult and possibly long negotiations, it is not certain whether the ministers can reach an agreement tonight.
