The federal judge in New York who presided over the case against Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán in 2019 on Tuesday denied the Mexican drug trafficker an appeal with which he sought to obtain a new trial.
Judge Brian M. Cogan of the Eastern District of New York denied the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel a writ of habeas corpus, according to the decision to which he had access Telemundo News.
Guzmán is serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison in Colorado after being convicted of charges related to drug trafficking.
The drug lord’s lawyers alleged unfair treatment by prosecutors and irregularities in his extradition from Mexico to the United States, among other things.
Under the writ of habeas corpus, Guzmán had to demonstrate that his constitutional rights were violated and that his trial would have been different.

OTHER REQUESTS OF “EL CHAPO”
In early 2022, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York confirmed the Mexican’s conviction, handed down on July 18, 2019, thus rejecting the appeal made by his lawyers, who argued that there were 10 legal errors during the trial.
Among these alleged errors, they claimed that the conditions of their confinement hindered the defense’s preparation for the trial or that the jurors did not fulfill their promise not to follow the trial through media coverage.
In January 2023, according to his lawyer, José Refugio Rodríguez, in an interview with the station Formula Radiothe drug trafficker asked to speak with López Obrador to inform him of the treatment he receives in prison and to raise the possibility of being transferred to Mexico.
With the extradition of Ovidio Guzmán “El Ratón” to the United States, sales of biographies have increased.
