The federal government will propose the review and modernization of the Bicentennial Understanding, the security agreement established by the governments of Mexico and the United States during the six-year term of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, Secretary of National Defense, stated this Tuesday that on instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo “this instrument must be reviewed, so that it continues, is updated and the actions are reinforced.”
In his daily press conference, Sheinbaum Pardo specified that the lawsuits filed by the López Obrador government against arms manufacturers and sellers in the United States continue their course in the courts of that country and indicated that his government will continue them.
“The demands continue and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs is following up on them,” Juan Ramón de la Fuente, said Sheinbaum Pardo when answering questions on the matter.
In this regard, Trevilla Trejo pointed out that “in the last six-year term, very great efforts were made for the United States to understand that part of the big problem we have in Mexico with violence” is related to the weapons that reach criminal groups from that country.
“They were made to see that it is necessary for them to implement actions,” he added, and said that these were coordinated in the context of the Bicentennial Understanding.
“This instrument must be reviewed, so that it continues, is updated and the actions are reinforced,” he stressed.
