Federal Government Urged to Find Permanent Solution for Yazidi Deportations

The federal government should find a permanent solution

From the ministry’s point of view, stopping deportations from North Rhine-Westphalia is only the second-best solution. “However, only the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Homeland can create lasting security for members of the Yazidi minority,” it says.

This alludes to the fact that the federal government has not yet implemented a nationwide deportation stop. The NRW Ministry cannot understand this. “The Foreign Office is very clear in its assessment of the situation, unfortunately the Federal Ministry of the Interior, which is responsible for returns or their suspension, is not drawing any conclusions from this.”

Minister Josefine Paul explained on Monday: “I have advocated for a nationwide deportation stop several times and over a long period of time with the responsible Federal Ministry of the Interior. Unfortunately, so far without success.” A permanent solution can only be achieved through federal legislation. “The country cannot be the repair shop for the Federal Minister of the Interior’s neglected work; our resources will be exhausted in six months at the latest,” said Paul.

Genocide recognized by the Bundestag

Yazidis are a religious minority among the Kurds with several hundred thousand members. They live mainly in northern Iraq. However, many have fled from the terrorist militia “Islamic State” (IS). In January, the German Bundestag recognized IS crimes against the Yazidis as genocide. The Yazidi faith combines elements of various Middle Eastern religions, primarily Islam, but also Christianity.
