Amid a summer surge in COVID-19 cases, Americans will soon be able to get another round of free at-home COVID tests by mail next month.

American households will be able to order four COVID-19 tests online through the COVIDtests.gov program by the end of September, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The agency did not announce an exact date when it might begin fulfilling orders.

Nasal tests will detect current COVID-19 variants and can be used through the end of the year, the agency said.

To date, the agency has distributed more than 900 million tests directly to American households, according to COVIDtests.gov.

If you need a COVID test right away, the government is continuing to provide low-cost or no-cost COVID-19 antigen and PCR tests to uninsured people at thousands of free testing sites across the country, the agency said. Find a location at testinglocator.cdc.gov.

At-home COVID tests are also available for sale at retailers and pharmacies across the United States and online. The tests sell for an average of $5 to $9 per test on Amazon.

In addition to testing, the government is also recommending that everyone aged six months and older receive an updated COVID-19 vaccine by 2024-2025, whether or not they have previously received a COVID-19 vaccine.
