The federal government will give New York City $106 million for expenses incurred to provide shelter to newly arrived immigrants. This is the first sum that the city receives for this purpose.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, with the support of Senator Chuck Schumer, sent a team to New York to help with the paperwork.
FEMA is now expected to approve the city government’s reimbursement request today.
Although the limit on reimbursements given to municipalities for these expenses is 10 percent, FEMA made an exception and will return to the city 15 percent of the total money that the municipal government has allocated so far to provide shelter to the newcomers.
