What is this about?
Every four to five years, the federal government looks for a company that can deliver newspapers across the country. It then provides subsidies for this, the so-called “newspaper contract” or the “press concession”. Until now, Bpost always received these subsidies, which currently amount to 170 million euros per year. Other companies could also nominate themselves in the coming years. From that “tender”, Bpost competitor PPP came out as the cheapest.
But the government did not want to give the subsidies to a private company like PPP, and therefore decided on Tuesday to develop a new system. Bpost will receive another 75 million euros over the next six months to continue working as it does now. Afterwards, newspaper publishers – such as DPG Media and Mediahuis – will receive direct subsidies. This support should mainly serve to continue delivering newspapers in Wallonia. In this new system, PPP will therefore not receive direct subsidies from the government.
