Since 1994, federal financial aid amounting to 339 million euros has flowed to Lower Saxony and 131 million euros to Bremen for the reactivation, new construction and expansion of railway lines in accordance with the GVFG federal program (Municipal Transport Financing Act). This is evident from the Federal Government’s response (20/10554) to a small question from the CDU/CSU parliamentary group (20/10152) out.
According to information from Deutsche Bahn AG (DB AG), nine DB routes have been newly connected in Lower Saxony and Bremen since 1994 with a total length of 83 kilometers, the answer says. Currently, 62 percent of the route kilometers in Lower Saxony and 98 percent of the route kilometers in Bremen are electrified. According to information from DB InfraGO AG, the electrification of the electric freight railway (EGB) Wilhelmshaven Ölweiche-Wilhelmshaven Nord (4 km) is being planned, the government says. This means that the electrification rate will increase by 2030, but will remain at around 62 percent of the route kilometers in the DB network in Lower Saxony. In addition, short sections of the North Harz network in Lower Saxony would be electrified so that battery-powered trains could be used there.
According to DB InfraGO AG, the level of electrification in Lower Saxony and Bremen will continue to increase in the future as a result of planned electrification measures and new lines. For example, an expansion and new construction between Hamburg, Hanover and Bremen, between Bielefeld and Hanover, the three-track expansion Elze-Nordstemmen and the electrification measures Hameln-Elze and Stade-Cuxhaven are being planned. The federal government writes that it is unlikely to be put into operation until 2030.
