Munich/Berlin (MH) – The musician and musicologist Kolja Lessing has received the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Bavaria’s Minister of Art Markus Blume (CSU) presented the 60-year-old with the award on Monday in Munich, as the ministry announced.

“Virtuoso violinist and pianist, successful composer and musicologist, committed teacher and mentor for young talents – you are rightly regarded as a versatile expert in the world of music,” said Blume. “As a great artist and scientist, you have earned lasting merit with talent, expertise and inexhaustible energy.”
Born in Karlsruhe in 1961, Lessing gives concerts worldwide as a pianist and violinist. In addition to his artistic work, he works as a teacher and mentor for young talents. After professorships at the music academies in Würzburg and Leipzig, he accepted a call to Stuttgart in 2000. As a music researcher, he deals, among other things, with artists defamed by the National Socialists.
