Federal Council plans container villages for 3,000 asylum seekers, but cantons resist contributing to operating costs

The Federal Council is planning container villages for 3,000 asylum seekers. He approved the loan of CHF 133 million on the condition that the cantons contribute to the operating costs. They fight back vehemently.

There are already several container villages for asylum seekers in Switzerland (here in Zihlacker in Zurich Seebach).

The need for additional accommodation is undisputed. The federal government is expecting scenarios of 24,000 to 40,000 asylum applications for the current year. Last year, 24,500 applications were made. There are also 66,000 people with protection status S who fled the war in Ukraine. It is the combination of people seeking protection from Ukraine and increasing asylum applications that are pushing the asylum system to the limits of its capacity.
