New Federal Council photo shows the state government in front of twelve mountains
The official Federal Council photo for 2024 shows the members of the state government in front of a mountain panorama. The new Federal President Viola Amherd wants to convey the values of confidence, solidarity and foresight with the image of the Federal Council in front of twelve mountains.
These values become more important in difficult times, the Federal Chancellery wrote in a statement about the picture on New Year’s Eve. We need confidence that Switzerland can use its strengths to master the challenges of the time. Connection is necessary in order to share responsibility and make courageous decisions.
Foresight is required to take the right steps today so that the hurdles of the future can be overcome with momentum.
“Worldwide events are unsettling many people in Switzerland. In such times, decisive action is needed. The common thread for this should be our shared values,” said the Federal President of 2024, Viola Amherd, according to the statement.
The photo symbolizes that the Federal Council also stands up for these values and works together against the background of these values.
The photo was taken by Bern photographer Sina Guntern. Mountains such as the Matterhorn, Monte San Salvatore in Ticino, the Chasseral in the Bernese Jura and the Säntis can be seen on a screen in front of which the Federal Council is posing. Guntern designed the mountain panorama himself using diffuser foil, cardboard, wood and fabric. The location for the photo is the Federal Palace East.
The picture was printed in an edition of 40,000 copies. It can be downloaded and ordered from the Confederation’s website. A short film shows how the Federal Council photo was taken.
The Federal Council photo 2023 should also convey security in uncertain times. It shows dark-clad magistrates and the Federal Chancellor with a rather serious expression together at a meeting table. In the middle you can see the outgoing Federal President Alain Berset.
In the Federal Council photos from previous years, the members of the state government and the Federal Chancellor each appeared cheerful: In the picture from 2022 you can see the majority of people smiling on a railway map of Switzerland. Every person stands where they come from.
In 2019, you could see Federal President Ueli Maurer – surrounded by other members of the government – laughing and taking photos of the audience with a cell phone. In 2018, Alain Berset, who was already Federal President at the time, was responsible for a cartoon-style image, an animated version of which was also suitable for social media channels.
