Decidedly, the RC Hyères-Carqueiranne-La Crau didn’t get it right on recruiting this summer. After enlisting the Tongan pillar Loni Uhila (32 years old; 1 selection), passed through Clermont and the Rochelais stadium, as well as the third Romanian line of Bayonne, André Gorin (33 years old; 34 caps), the Var club has just achieved a new big blow by recruiting the New Zealand winger David Smith (34 years old; 1.72 m, 95kg).
He played in Narbonne (National) since 2019
Passed in particular by Toulon and Castres, with whom he was double champion of France (in 2014 with the RCT and in 2018 with the CO), as well as triple European champion with the Red and black (2013, 2014 and 2015), David Smith evolved since 2019 to Narbonne, on National.
Heavily injured in a knee at the start of last season, the former New Zealand 7-way international still participated in the rise of the Audois club in Pro D2, notably entering into play during the National final lost to Bourg-en-Bresse (16-26).
At 34 years old, the test hunter native of Manase (Samoa) will therefore offer himself a final challenge in Federal 1, with the ambitious Var club of RC Hyères-Carqueiranne-La Crau. He is the second Narbonne player to put his suitcases down at the RCHCC, after the South African hooker Elandre Huggett (29 years).
He will also coach the Juniors and train the young people of the club
In addition to bringing all his experience to the RCHCC first team managed by a certain Gregory Le Corvec, ex-third international passed by Perpignan, Toulon and Mont-de-Marsan, ” Smithy »Will also integrate the supervision of training center of the Var club. “It is a real added value for our young people thanks to the experience that it will be able to bring them and the advice that it will give them”, indicates the RCHCC in its press release.
For several seasons, David Smith began a retraining as a trainer, since he already trained the Cadets of RC Narbonnais last year, and is currently passing his technician diplomas. Next year, he will therefore supervise the development center and coach the juniors from Hyères. ” We want focus on our training and give our young people more resources in order to put them in the best conditions so that they can progress, ”explains RC Hyères-Carqueiranne-La Crau, who aims to move up to National 2 next season.
