February 7: Sittler collects 10 points

IT HAPPENED ON… February 7th

1976 : Darryl Sittler of the Toronto Maple Leafs scores the best individual offensive performance in NHL history when he scores six goals and four assists for a night of 10 points in an 11-4 win over the Bruins from Boston to Maple Leaf Gardens.

Sittler assists on goals from Lanny McDonald and Ian Turnbull in the first period, he scores three goals and prepares two for Borje Salming in the second, and he completes his historic performance by scoring three more in the third.

The Maple Leafs captain breaks the old record of eight points in a game, held by Maurice Richard and Bert Olmstead.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

1933 : George Hainsworth and the Montreal Canadiens defeat the Maple Leafs 2-0 at the Forum. This is Hainsworth’s 71st shutout, allowing him to pass Alec Connell for the most shutouts in history.

1956 : Gordie Howe becomes the first member of the Detroit Red Wings and the third player in NHL history to score 300 goals. He reached the plateau with a power-play goal in the first period of Detroit’s 3-2 win over the Chicago Black Hawks at Olympia Stadium. Howe’s goaltender Al Rollins was also the victim of Howe’s 200th goal.

Exactly nine years later, Howe became the first player in NHL history to score 100 goals against each of the other teams in the league. He scores his 100th goal against the Canadiens in an offensive blast of five goals in the middle period in a 6-0 win at Olympia Stadium.

1971 : Bobby Hull scores his 544th NHL goal, tying Maurice Richard for second in history, behind Howe. It was the only goal in the Black Hawks’ 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Chicago Stadium. Tony Esposito makes 28 saves and signs his 22nd shutout in the NHL.

1985 : Mike Bossy scores three goals to score his 33rd NHL-recordable hat trick to help the New York Islanders defeat the New York Rangers 7-5 at the Nassau Coliseum. Bossy hits the mark once in each period to break the old record of 32 trebles set by Phil Esposito.

1989 : Wayne Gretzky, in his first season with the Los Angeles Kings, is named the NHL All-Star Game MVP at the Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton, his home during his first nine seasons in the NHL. Gretzky, playing alongside his former Oilers line mate Jari Kurri and current Kings teammate Luc Robitaille, scored one goal and two assists for the Campbell Association in a 9-5 victory.

1995 : Penguins forward Joe Mullen becomes first US-born player to collect 1,000 points. Mullen scores two goals and adds two assists in the Penguins’ 7-3 win over the Florida Panthers. He is the 42nd player in NHL history to achieve the feat.

2020 : The rookie keeper Elvis merzlikins makes 16 saves to extend their winning streak to eight and help the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 at Nationwide Arena. This is the fifth shutout for Merzlikins in the streak, the Blue Jackets’ longest winning streak by a rookie goaltender since joining the NHL in 2000.
