On this day, February 1, but in 1946, the first Secretary General of the United Nations, the Norwegian Trygve Halvdan Lie, was appointed, who formally took possession of his new position the following day. Lie had witnessed the birth of the UN since he led the Norwegian delegation at the United Nations Conference on International Organization, held between April and June 1945 in San Francisco, where the founding Charter of this organization was drawn up. He served as Secretary General until his resignation in November 1952. During his tenure, the current United Nations headquarters in New York was built and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed.
